Introduction to Python for data analysis

Why learn Python?

​

• A powerful, open source, multi-purpose programming language that has become popular with data scientists.

• Huge online community with a vast array of free packages (plug-ins) that are very useful for data scientists. For example; Pandas for data manipulation, ScraPy for web scraping and Matplotlib for plotting.

• One of Google's officially used programming languages, and commonly used across many large companies.

• Very good for manipulation of both text-based and numerical data. Fantastic for tasks like sentiment analysis and machine learning.

Course structure

​

We aim to get you writing working code as quickly as possible and prioritise learning from trial and error rather than theory. Sessions will consist of short presentations with live code demonstrations and examples. You will then work on interesting practicals, creating calculators and games, designed to help you to think like a data scientist. 

​

30 hours total:

​

• Data types, variables and maths (3 hours)

• Equalities, if statements and lists (4 hours)

• For loops and string operations (4 hours)

• While loops and built-in methods (3 hours)

• Writing your own functions (3 hours)

• Reading in data: .txt and .csv (3 hours)

• Intro to Pandas (3 hours)

• Intro to SciPy for statistics: Correlations and T-tests (1 hour)

• Final practicals: Choice of - Titanic data analysis, Pokemon game, Personal finance calculator, or Tailored practical (6 hours)

The 30 hours of this course can be covered in a 5-day week of full day sessions with breaks, or split across any combination of day/evening sessions as you prefer. We are extremely flexible and can adapt your course structure to suit your needs. The course can be delivered in-office, at a venue of your choice, or virtually on Zoom.
